Setting up a remote desktop

Overview

This is a guide for setting up a remote desktop environment to connect to a VM using RDP.

 Instructions

Remote desktop currently only works with Ubuntu, due to issues with desktop log in on our Rocky images

  1. Set up the RDP server:

    1. Install xrdp

      sudo apt install xrdp

       

    2. Check that xrdp is running:

      systemctl status xrdp

      If the service is not active run:

      sudo systemctl enable xrdp sudo systemctl start xrdp
  2. Create a security group to allow ingress from port 3389 (Create and Delete Security Group )

  3. Connect to the VM using windows remote desktop connection:

    1. open windows remote desktop connection

    2. Type in the IP address of the VM and press connect.

    3. Log in to the machine with your usual username and password.

If you get a black screen, click to wake the machine up,
